A philosophy
professor stood before his class with some items on the table in front of him.
When the class began, wordlessly he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise
jar and proceeded to fill it with rocks, about 2 inches in diameter.
He then asked the
students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was. So the professor
then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar
lightly. The pebbles, of course, rolled into the open areas between the rocks. He then asked the
students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was. The professor picked
up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up
everything else. He then asked once
more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous “Yes.”
“Now,” said the
professor, “I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. "The
rocks are the important things – your family, your partner, your health, your
children – things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your
life would still be full. The pebbles are the
other things that matter – like your job, your house, your car. The sand is
everything else. The small stuff.”
“If you put the sand
into the jar first,” he continued “there is no room for the pebbles or the
rocks. The same goes for your life. If you spend all
your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the
things that are important to you.
Pay attention to the things that are critical
to your happiness. Play with your children. Take your partner out dancing.
There will always be time to go to work, clean the house, give a dinner party
and fix the disposal.
Take care of the
rocks first – the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is
just sand.

This is a good story and it is true. I always try to fill my jar mostly with rocks, but sometimes I spend more time dealing with small things that are less important. At the end, we are going to remember the beautiful moments that we spent with our family and friends, and we should try to spend more time sharing with them instead of being stressed with our job or material things. Everything has a moment...
ResponderEliminarMostly for me, my jar is filled of rocks, because for me material is recovered, but I have much fear of lose my family, my partner or even my friends. Material, job or another stuff that easyly you can lose can´t be first in your life. When you put stuff without importance in the first place of your life you will be empty when that stuff aren´t there.
ResponderEliminarI like this story because it makes you think how we spend our life and with who we spend it. My jar is mostly fill with my family (specially my parents) and some friends, my pebbles are other friends and my studies and my sand is the rest of the things like money, clothes, technology and other stuffs. Sometimes, I spend more time thinking about how to get money or how to solve a problem and it shouldn´t be in that way, because I´m just thinking about the little things and Where are the rocks? After I read this story, I would like to say a way to be more happy " When you have a problem, think about the rocks they would not help you to solve all your problems but they can animate you to continue because you are not alone". When I said that my rocks are specially my parents is because friends and other stuffs will go way but parents will stay all the time.
ResponderEliminargo away... sorry :(
EliminarWell, I think that my jar is filled mostly of rocks and pebbles, everything that I have it's important for me although sometimes I spend my time with somethings that doesn't matter. I always try to pay attention to my friends, try to be with my parents more time, play with my youngest sister and enjoy my life with my rocks, keep it and increase it .

ResponderEliminarWell, We'd already done this activity last friday in the classroom, but it was so important to us. For me pebbles and rocks represent the most important things in my life (My family, My parents, my dear friends and my professors and specially God.), pebbles are my achievements, my goals, my dreams, as an example: I'm to Graduate as an english professor in few years. I consider this story as an excellent life example. We don't have to spend our time in things that don't matter to us. I must pay atention to the rocks and pebbles and don't lose my time in another things.
I'm Going to graduate* sorry for the mistake.
EliminarBefore giving my opinion of this story I'd like to say that is good when people remind us this kind of things, because unconsciously we forget about the most important things in life, like love for others, respect for others, your family, friends, and so on. At this time few people are interested in this kind of stuff and only one thing can get into my mind and it's because of the money. But we can not blame them, because who wouldn't want to have a big house with a beautiful yard, a sport car and an amazing job? I would! It's something that we all want it! And that's why we can't judge anyone. We get so worried for knowing what will happen tomorrow, that we put aside our values and we can't let that happen. We just have to remember who we really are and kept are values all the time. So I'd say that my jar is full of rocks but it's also full of pebbles. Everything counts in this life, even the small little things.
ResponderEliminarThis story has a great lesson, as it gives you to understand that it is important to have priorities in our lives. My main priority (rocks) are God and my family, I have no doubt about that, I love them and they are everything to me, I would enjoy anything if I do not have them. The secondary things (pebbles) are my goals (graduating as a teacher of English, being a singer, have a good job, get married and have kids) it takes time but it should not consume or take away the time with our family. Sand in my life is just the result of my actions and from there I'll see if I enjoy it or not.
ResponderEliminarWe read this already! And has an amazing lesson, My priority are rocks because they represent my family, my friends and GOD! They makes me stronger. The pebbles represent my dreams, everything that I wish to have in a future like a husband, kids etc. And then sand, sand is the little things that represent material things.

Correcting my mistake "They make me stronger"
Eliminarwell , i think about story is really matter for people because people tend to forget of things that really matter about our life , for me my jar is filled of rocks the most important for me is god after are my parents , my sister and brother therefore i think that the most important in our life are the values that we have and the love of god
ResponderEliminarI think this story is so beautiful and perfect to explain how you should give the right amount of importance to the things that make up your life. The sand, the rocks and the pebbles, they're all important because if you didn´t have the three of them together you wouldn´t have a good balance in your life. The problem comes when people give the wrong amount of importance to other things, for example money over family, or working too much and not having time to spend with their children.
ResponderEliminarRight now my life is mostly filled with rocks, my rocks are God, my family because at the end of the day they are the ones that will be with me until the very end. My pebbles would be my friends, my boyfriend, my job my career my dream of getting married and having a beautiful family and also graduating and being an excellent professional, and also my everyday problems or worries. And the sand could be the material things that sometimes are necessary but they're not everything to me.
well, I had never asked me this question and I had never ever thought something like this. But I think my jar is full of rocks, pebbles and sand. Around a bit. I did not know what is the important, priorities and space that should occupy everything. This story made me reflect and think my jar could have more rocks and less sand in the background if I organize myself better.
ResponderEliminarMy opinion most people say that the most important is the family and I say: of course, they are very important in life and friends too, but I think that we live in one world where the rocks and the sand both have the same importance because our family and friends can give us motivation and good intentions, but if we don`t have the materials things so we can do it real, the motivation and the good actions won’t be enough. However we have to live with them both, the family and friends are the most important, but we always will need sand in our life. “We can´t live only with rocks”. Well, I can say: mi jar is a combination at this moment, I have strong rocks into it, but I am always putting sand too.

Firstly, the most important things in your life must to be the rocks. I mean, if you don't have rocks, you live in a nonsense life. Pebbles and the other stuffs are less -by far- important but they help to set everyone to show us the real personality. Don't feel guilty, but you have to know everything in your life, even pebbles and sand. People love those one. What's more, I can say in my current life I'm enjoyining it too much and I feel happy with myself (inside). Therefore, my jar is crowded with rocks. Despite this, I don't lie you, I like a little bit pebbles and sand. Just neccesary!
ResponderEliminarP.D. I tell you, sand goes with the wind!

I had heard this story before, it's a pretty good way to make us analize and appreciate the things that are important in the journey that it's called our life. My jar is filled with rocks and pebbles. Althought sometimes I spend time on the sand. Actually, I think that without the sand the jar wouldn't be completely full. But it's also true that we must pay more attention to the things that matter the most.

This is a beautiful story that make you think what are really your priorities in your life. My jar is absolutely full of rocks like my family and God beacuse I don't know I would do without them, I would fell incomplete so They'll always be for me. My pebbles are my friends and my dreams like graduating as english teacher, getting a good job, having kids and my sand are material things that you can replace any day. I can say that when you appreciate simple things like speding time with your mother needless to say your life is perfect.

I think that this story is completely true because it helps us to establish priorities in our life. Firstly, the most important in my life is my family, God and maybe some friends because they are my happiness and they are everything to me, specially mis parents and my siblings. Secondly, my pebbles can be my goals and in the future I want to have a stability job. And finally is the rest of the materials things that can be totally recovered.

ResponderEliminarMmmm My rocks are god, my family, relatives, some friends because, they are with me everytime and they have became in the center of my life throu the time that I've been alive so far. My pebbels are the others friends, things I want to do now and in the future like my studies, my own family, to be a good man, to have a good jod, etc because those are things that I ever think and work everyday and all the time. Finally my sand are material things like clothing, tecnology or the money because those are things that we can get and lose at the same time. I believe that the money can help you but, it will never make you happy.
ResponderEliminarP.D. We have thinking about our real priorities before to be late...
I agree what they mean and each one's life have to be filled with them, to feel life is worth. It will depend on the values you get from family, through life and how you practice them. Of course taking into account God and family first, each one will need others thing to enjoy life, such: to share with family and friend, watch a film, read a book, sport, hobby, these are part of life, and they are needed. The secret is to know how to combine all of them, and to set priorities. Materials things go and come, but when you died you won't take anyone. So enjoy your life.

ResponderEliminarMy jar is half full with rocks, pebbles, and sand. I think my jar is huge enough to keep more rocks, pebbles, and sand, as well. This kind of parable reminds me the way Japanese people consider themselves as the center of three concentric circles. They also say that Japanese people have three hearts; one in their mouth so everybody (coworkers, colleagues, acquaintances and strangers) can see it; another one in their chest so family, relatives and friends can feel it; and one that they don't even know where it is but it is there only for themselves. For a Latin American point of view this position lacks of feeling and emotions. However, for Far Eastern people, particularly Japanese people, this is a way of living and they have succeeded in doing so. I respect evryone's point of view and I take an eclectic way of being. The more you learn where your position in life is, the better you puit others into your own life. Likewise, the more you love yourself, the better you love others.
ResponderEliminarSometimes there is so much sand and pebbles in my jar that the rocks look blurry. That`s when I need to bring things back into perspective.
ResponderEliminarMy jar is mostly filled with rocks, but there are some moments in life when small things seem bigger and the sand takes a lot more place tan it should. It is important to keep in mind that the rocks should always come first but also to know that we NEED to leave space for small things too. The hard thing here is to find the right balance!
ResponderEliminarEither big or small aspects of life happen for making us stronger. I really think that we are on an amazing trip in this life, therefore every single detail we live or every person we meet/ share with has a message to learn.
ResponderEliminarRocks set our foundations, pebbles maintain those bases and sand help them last for years.
